OLDEST STUDIED FOREST IN OREGON - Tahkenitch Lake - Mallard Arm, D.R. Johnson Lbr. Co. - Reedsport, OR.

Lands around this lake have been studied by the University of Oregon for many years interested in the culture of native American tribes which lived along it's shores for over 8000 yrs. D.R. Johnson has owned and managed timberlands adjacent to the lake for several decades. Looking to the long term commitment, D.R. Johnson Lumber has been a leader in the timber industry practicing environmentally sustainable forest management on their lands protecting the shoreline, wetlands and critical wildlife habitat. The studies by the U of O show that the native Americans who lived on these lands practiced a long term commitment to sustainable forests.

The significance is that this forest may well have been regenerated over 200 times. The Indians burned the forest many times to reduce brush and competing vegetation to provide ideal habitat for wildlife of all kinds. Studies show that these are some of the most productive soils in Oregon. The forest in this photo has been harvested at least 3-times since early settlers came to this region. For over 50 years D.R. Johnson Lumber Co.'s long term commitment to environmentally friendly logging practices has not been compromised. Productive soils are a forest landowners most precious resource and the D.R. Johnson Company takes special care of the resource for the benefit of future generations.
