MOOSEHEAD LAKE REGION – Plum Creek Timberlands - Greenville, Maine.
Plum Creek’s Moosehead Lake Concept Plan, recently approved by the state of Maine, provides lasting, large-scale conservation of nearly 400,000 acres of forests, including a 363,000-acre conservation easement, the second largest in U.S. history. The easement will ensure that sustainable forestry continues to be practiced while protecting wildlife habitat and prohibiting residential development. The easement guarantees the right for the public to access the lands for traditional recreational pursuits.
Close to 4 percent of the area will be zoned for development which can occur over the next 30 years under the terms of the Plan. This includes two resorts: one at Lily Bay on Moosehead Lake, another at Big Moose Mountain. The Plan also incorporates several recreational amenities which include, among other things, public access to private land with more than 170 miles of road and trail easements that will expand and diversify outdoor opportunities for residents and visitors.
